Today, pseudo “coaches” are everywhere on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
Some call themselves coaches overnight after reading a book or completing a short online course.
As a result, the word coach is overused, and the profession is often misunderstood by people who have never experienced professional coaching.
But coaching is an art that requires proper training, a clear framework, and adherence to professional standardsdefined by the International Coach Federation (ICF).
Why Coaching Competencies Matter
Founded in 1995, the ICF is the leading global organization for professional coaching. It sets high standards of excellence and ethics and offers international certification, guaranteeing the professionalism of trained coaches.
To avoid confusion between a certified coach and someone who simply calls themselves a coach, the ICF has defined 8 key coaching competencies.
These competencies are the foundation of the profession and help clients identify a serious, effective coach.
The 8 Essential Competencies of a Professional Coach
1. Demonstrating Ethical Practice
A professional coach follows a strict code of ethics. Transparency, confidentiality, and integrity are non-negotiable—forming the base of a trusted coaching relationship.
2. Embodying a Coaching Mindset
A real coach maintains an open, curious, and flexible mindset. They do not provide advice, but help clients find their own answers.
3. Establishing and Maintaining Agreements
From the first session, a professional coach clarifies goals, expectations, and the coaching process with the client. This agreement is the backbone of the coaching relationship.
4. Creating Trust and Safety
A skilled coach fosters a safe, non-judgmental environment where clients can explore vulnerabilities and embrace meaningful change.
5. Being Present
A professional coach is fully present in the moment, which allows them to fully engage with what emerges during the session without distraction.
6. Active Listening
Active listening allows the coach to go beyond words, noticing silences, energy, and hesitation to understand the client’s reality deeply.
7. Evoking Awareness
Through powerful questions, reflective statements, and strategic silence, the coach helps clients experience breakthroughs and discover new perspectives.
8. Facilitating Client Growth
The coach helps clients turn insights into action, fostering autonomy, responsibility, and tangible results.
How to Find a Certified Coach
These 8 competencies are not just checkboxes—they are a living foundation guiding every coaching interaction. Coaching is a demanding profession, rooted in ethics and human connection.
